CLINICAL APPLICATION OF THE ADULT ATTACHMENT INTERVIEW - MONTHLY CASE CONSULTATION GROUP
Facilitated by: Karen Doyle Buckwalter
Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) Clinical Case Consultation Group
Fall 2025 – Spring 2026
The Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) is a structured, semi-clinical tool designed to assess an individual’s state of mind regarding attachment, particularly in relation to early caregiving experiences. Originally developed as a research instrument by Mary Main and colleagues, the AAI has since found valuable clinical applications across mental health, developmental psychology, and psychotherapy.
Many clinicians using the AAI in clinical practice seek deeper learning and ongoing consultation to enhance their skills and confidence. In response to this need, we are offering a 9-month Case Consultation Group beginning in Fall 2025 and continuing through Spring 2026.
This group will provide an in-depth exploration of the AAI's clinical application through case presentations, group discussion, and Q&A sessions. Participants will also benefit from supplemental learning opportunities, including mini-lectures on AAI-related topics, as time and group interest allow.
The consultation group will be led by Karen Doyle Buckwalter, who brings extensive experience with the AAI. Karen first attended the 2-Week AAI Institute in 2008 to learn the AAI coding system and has integrated its use into her clinical work ever since. She returned for a second 2-Week AAI Institute in 2025 and is also a trained, reliable coder in the 1998 Reflective Function Coding System for the AAI, developed by Fonagy, Target, and the Steeles. Her training and years of experience provide a rich foundation for guiding others in the thoughtful application of the AAI in clinical settings.
Please NOTE: This is not a consultation group for coding the AAI for research or other purposes. This group is for the clinical application of the AAI only. To become a Certified AAI Coder, you must attend a 2-week AAI Institute and pass the reliability test.
