About this event
ADAPTED CLASSICS
Course description: The purpose of this course is to read Great Books adapted to younger readers or “good books” with minimal adaptation in order to spark pre-teen/early teenage students' interest in reading works of classic literature and to teach them to engage in Socratic discussion about themes, characters, plot, etc. Parts of the books will be read aloud; others will be left for the students to read on their own. We will also focus on history related to the stories. Our summer 2025 readings are selections from Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey. Although all editions are adapted to younger readers, some books contain references to violence, death, and so on. Please preview the books to make sure the themes are appropriate for your child. As different books will be read in future terms, students may repeat the course many times. Recommended for students ages 10-13. This course is graded based on attendance, preparation, and participation. All books are free of charge in pdf format or may be purchased in printed form. Fall 2025 readings include The Iliad and the Odyssey (Homer) and The Tragedy of Julius Caesar (Shakespeare).
