By Tom Short

Overview

Get ready to level up your improv game w/ Beth Organ in this 2-day acting course that will have you laughing and learning like never before

Take your improv to the next level with this two-day Acting for Improvisers course, led by actor and improviser Beth Organ (Acaprov/Drunk Classics/Smashed). Perfect for improvisers looking to level up their scenes, or actors excited to try improv through a familiar lense, this intensive workshop dives into the acting techniques that will make your improv scenes more grounded, connected, nuanced and compelling.

Add another string to your improv bow as we spend some of our workshop time exploring improvised drama, setting comedy aside for just a moment, and diving deeper into the art of improvised theatre-making – perhaps even re-finding the laughter in truth.

Players will explore acting games and exercises drawn from the work of the world’s leading theatre practitioners, and adapted for improv in an accessible and joy-centred way. No acting experience is necessary to access this course, designed with beginners and seasoned improvisers in mind.

What is Acting for Improvisers?

Acting for Improvisers is a type of training that helps improvisers bring more truth, depth, and emotional realism to their improvised scenes.

In traditional improv, performers often focus on being funny, quick, and inventive — acting skills help make those moments more believable, grounded, and engaging for the audience.

What you’ll be doing on this intensive course

You will be introduced to acting fundamentals that bring authenticity and complexity to improv scenes. We’ll explore building believable characters, play with status and subtext, and get comfortable moving seamlessly between realism and heightened play.

The course is also a great opportunity to safely experiment, explore, and find your acting process. And of course, you’ll still get to enjoy playing with the classic improv you know and love.

What you’ll get out of the day

You’ll come out of the course with a new confidence in your performing, storytelling and improvising ability. Offer more to your scene partners, and explore the new and unexpected places that you can take your improv scenes. Take these new skills away with you to aid you at work, in life and onstage.

Testimonials for Beth’s ‘Introduction To Musical Improv’ course, hosted with Improquo:

“That was so much fun. Beth created a really safe and non judgemental space for us to play with a wonderful stream of games, exercises and ideas. Thank you!

What is there to say about the musical improv course, other than its amazing, confidence boosting, energising, and for me takes improv comedy to the next level.”

“Beth, our course leader, made this experience what it was. Her leadership set an environment and tone of fun, safety and enjoyment that made it impossible to not give something a go. She broke each principle down into small easy to digest parts matched always with a great supporting exercise, and coached us through challenges. I’m amazed at what we all accomplished in just four weeks and that is owed to how Beth delivered the course. Expert facilitation.”

“Going into the course I didn’t know what to expect. I knew I would have fun. I knew I would meet new people. I knew I would learn something new. I also knew I couldn’t sing, but loved singing. Leaving the course, I’m left wanting more. I did have lots and lots of fun. I did meet a fantastic bunch of people. I definitely learnt a tonne of new skills. I also still can’t sing, still love singing but I now know what a harmony is, and how to incorporate rhythm and rhyme. My advice to anyone thinking of giving it a go would be, stop thinking about it and jump straight in, with both feet, right into the deep end. I promise you won’t regret it.”

“I loved the ensemble work, the forms, the honesty. It's easy to get lost in the idea that improv is only to be played for the laughs, and yet there is a deeper truth to it. A five-star rating from me. Thank you. I’d love to see and do more.”
