The message from COP27 is clear: it is time for action and accountability. We must work with unprecedented intention to transform the way we live and do business to protect our shared natural resources, and the private sector is a key driver of this transformation. Global Commons Alliance’s Accountability Accelerator (GCAA) is well positioned to deliver on the accountability mandate. We are working with a diverse ecosystem of stakeholders to ensure the architecture is in place to support commitments, actions, and investments in nature and to ensure they measure up.

Session Description:

This interactive session will explore the steps to building an accountability architecture through identified levers of change: data, standards, campaigns, legal, finance, technology. Starting with companies understanding their impacts and dependencies, ensuring that companies are reporting on nature in a way that is verifiable, and helping ratchet up corporate ambition and delivery through data availability, standards harmonization, rule change, market signals, campaigns, and legal structures.

Participants and panelists will engage in a conversation about how accountability can balance the encouragement and support for business leaders while calling out and raising flags about non-compliance and inaction. We will explore the most effective tools for accountability and identify the gaps and how to best fill them.

This session is a conversation on how to move forward and a celebration of the launch GCA’s Accountability Accelerator.

The Accountability Accelerator has been set up as an orchestrating, convening, and regranting platform. We are engaging stakeholders, creating a comprehensive accountability ecosystem (bottom up and top down), and ensuring that corporations are delivering on their nature commitments in line with science while combatting inaction and greenwashing. We will use data, standards, benchmarks, financial and legal tools, journalism, campaigns and technology to push for accountability. The Accelerator is mobilizing financing from the philanthropic community and others to support local accountability efforts. Together with the Science Based Targets Network, the Accountability Accelerator will develop the monitoring, reporting and validation strategy for the forthcoming science based targets for nature.
