About this event

Journey through downtown Springfield as we discuss the stories of early Illinois women who worked for the abolition of slavery and to secure civil rights for women and people of color. This one-hour, 1.5-mile walking tour begins at the Lincoln Home Visitor Center and concludes at the Vachel Lindsay Home. Following the walking tour, an optional tour of the interior of the Lindsay Home will be offered to expand on the Lindsay family's role in empowering Illinois women during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The women featured lived across several generations and came from different corners of the state, but all shared the sentiment expressed by Illinois’ first female State Senator, Florence Fifer Bohrer: “It is possible to build a better world.”
