Webinar Description:

This webinar will aim to give participants tools and practical examples of how to create a culture of engagement. Doug Linkhart will give an overview of the National Civic League's tool, the Civic Index, and Cori Burbach will discuss examples of how Dubuque has engaged its community over a prolonged period of time.

Tools- Civic Index

Participants will learn how to use the National Civic League’s Civic Index to measure their community’s civic capital – the formal and informal relationships, networks and capacities that enable communities to solve problems and thrive.

Examples- Dubuque, IA

Tough economic times made Dubuque recognize the need to leverage partnerships and residents’ strengths to put the city back on the map. The business community, the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, local non-profits, and the local government worked together to help address the issue by creating Inclusive Dubuque. By creating common goals and a shared identity throughout several visioning processes and other engagement efforts, Dubuque has become known for their sustainability and equity efforts as well as creating a culture of engagement.

Presenters:

Doug Linkhart, President of the National Civic League

Doug is a public policy expert who has worked on every side of civic engagement—neighborhood leader, city councilman, state legislator, head of a city department, federal employee, nonprofit manager and business leader. At the National Civic League, Doug Linkhart's life-long values of inclusiveness and equity are in close alignment with the organization’s mission, and are used to guide his leadership as president.

Cori Burbach, Assistant City Manager  of the City of Dubuque, IA

As assistant city manager, Cori assists the city manager in directing the day-to-day operations of the city government, acts as city manager in his absence, and exercises general supervision over all functions and activities of the city when acting for the city manager. She also has a significant role in implementing the city manager’s management philosophy of problem solving, developing partnerships, and being input-oriented.
