"Yellow Rose" directed by Diane Paragas
OPENING NIGHT FILM | World Premiere | Feature Musical Drama
Thu, May 2nd @ 7pm - Aratani Theater
Buy Tix: https://festival.vcmedia.org/2019/movies/yellow-rose/

Combining drama, music and the timely issue, Yellow Rose tells the story of a headstrong Filipino girl from a small Texas town who fights to pursue her dreams as a country music star while facing the threat of deportation.

"Seadrift" directed by Tim Tsai

In 1979, a Vietnamese refugee shoots and kills a white crab fisherman at the public town docks in Seadrift, TX. What began as a dispute over fishing territory erupts into violence and ignites a maelstrom of boat burnings, KKK intimidation, and other hostilities against Vietnamese refugees along the Gulf Coast. Seadrift memorializes the 40th anniversary of this harrowing event of redemption.

"Halwa" co-directed by Nirav Bhakta
World Premiere | HBO APA Visionaries Finalist | Short LGBTQIA Drama
Fri, May 3rd @ 7pm - Pacific Design Center

On the eve of her wedding anniversary, empty-nester Sujata Chopra attempts to find some joy in her broken marriage, until she learns about the passing of her childhood companion’s spouse on Facebook. Having been disconnected from this woman for over 30 years over a misunderstanding, Sujata finds the courage to reach out to send her condolences. They reconnect, sparking friction when Sujata’s controlling husband, Dr. Chopra, finds out.

"Jaddoland" directed by Nadia Shihab

When the filmmaker returns to her hometown in the Texas panhandle to visit her mother, an artist from Iraq, she turns her lens on her mother’s increasingly isolated life, as well as the beauty and solace that emerge through her creative process. Soon, the filmmaker’s charismatic grandfather arrives from Iraq, prompting the filmmaker on a deeper search to understand her own roots and connections to the places she calls home.

"Pussy Talk" directed by Kim Tran
