Event description
This workshop is for people familiar with the basics of scikit-learn and would like to learn more modern and advanced features.

About this event

Taught by Adrin Jalali, a core developer of scikit-learn. This workshop is for people who are already familiar with the basics of how to use scikit-learn, the usual estimator API, i.e. fit, predict, score, etc, and would like to dig deeper into certain topics, upgrade their scripts and pipelines, and use more modern and advanced scikit-learn features.

This workshop will go deeper in certain topics such as:

  • Pipelines, as transformers and predictors
  • *GridSearchCV: different existing implementations, their pros and cons
  • cross_val* to get a more reliable score, and a confidence band on the score
  • model interpretation and visualization: ways to look at feature importances, and have a better feeling on what the model finds important
  • how to write your own custom estimator, that be a transformer, a classifier, a regressor, and a meta-estimator, and how to test its scikit-learn compatibility

The workshop is quite hands on, and you'll be working on different notebooks where you implement parts of the solution. You will then have access to the notebooks with the solutions in them to compare. There will be plenty of time for discussions and questions.

The workshop will be presented live on Zoom. Attendees will also have access to an additional office hour with the instructor. Information about accessing the Zoom meeting will be emailed to attendees prior to the event.

Adrin Jalali is one of scikit-learn core developers, and has been a maintainer of the package since 2018. He did his PhD on machine learning and cancer diagnostics, and then moved to the industry to be a machine learning consultant and an open source developer. He has had a focus on ethics of algorithmic decision making in the past 2 years and is also a core developer of fairlearn.

This workshop is built on top of existing material developed at Inria institute by the scikit-learn team, and Andreas Mueller.

Questions can be emailed to jim@numfocus.org.
