A Scholarly Stroll Through the Sermon on the Mount
Overview
Zoom | January 5 - February 23 | 7:30 pm Eastern | 8 Sessions
The “Sermon on the Mount” that Jesus speaks in Matthew 5–7 has been called an “epitome” of his teachings. Martin Luther and others have emphasized its high demands, and seen it as Jesus’s way of making us aware that we need grace. On the other hand, many Jesus people across history have worked through the difficulty level and seen it as his expected way to live. The Sermon has formed the programs of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and other leaders of non-violent movements that have altered world history.
It’s our turn to read it! On the eight Mondays of January and February of 2026 at 7:30pm Eastern, the Rev. Dr. Allen Hilton will lead us through the Sermon for both academic insights and spiritual applications. This course will see it through ancient eyes first, then move it toward our 21st century, lives, churches, and world. Join us!
The 8 sessions will occur on January 5, 12, 19, 26, February 2, 9, 16, and 23.
You only need to register one time in order to attend all 8 sessions. Registration closes on January 2, 2026.
**Current students, staff, and faculty can register for free by emailing us here.
The Rev. Dr. Allen Hilton is the Executive Director of House United, a non-profit organization he founded in 2016. His book, "A House United: How the Church Can Save the World", moves from the facts and causes of American political polarization to the possibility that faith communities can help solve it.
The Rev. Dr. Hilton is a former Yale Divinity School faculty member, where he taught the New Testament in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He later took the call to become a pastor for The Congregational Church of New Canaan, CT, Plymouth Church in Seattle, WA, and Wayzata Community Church in MN. For more information go to our website.
