The MRC LMS is hosting a series of events to celebrate the launch of a book and website inspired by the phrase ‘A Picture of Health’.

In 2019, we launched an exciting project exploring what the phrase “a picture of health” means to society today. As part of the project, we have collected over 100 interpretations of the phrase which have been compiled into a book that will launch in January 2023.

From a range of artists, scientists, community leaders, politicians and activists, the contributions represent a unique insight into how different individuals perceive ‘health’.

Event Details

This event is hosted by the renowned writer and broadcaster Vivienne Parry, and will feature an exhibition of some of the contributions in the book. There will also be two panel discussions that will focus on the interface between Art and Science, and the Communication of Science.

The first will focus on the interface between Art and Science, and includes speakers such as Angela Palmer, an artist whose sculptures feature in private and public collections worldwide, Giles Yeo, Professor of Molecular Neuroendocrinology at the MRC Metabolic Diseases Unit and Scientific Director of the Genomics/Transcriptomics Core at the University of Cambridge, Michael Rosen, a poet, writer, broadcaster, and Professor of Children's Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Professor Peter Openshaw, a mucosal immunologist and respiratory physician working on lung infections at Imperial College London.

After a 30-minute break, the award-winning poet and creative-writing tutor Heidi Williamson, will read her poem introducing the theme of the second panel: communication of science. Speakers include Professor Declan O'Regan, an MRC investigator and consultant radiologist who leads the Computational Cardiac Imaging Group at the MRC LMS, Professor Sian Harding, Emeritus Professor of Cardiac Pharmacology in the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London, and Pallab Ghosh, a science correspondent for BBC News.

The event will conclude with a food and drink reception, and the opportunity to enjoy the exhibition and the views of London from the 7th floor of the LMS building.
