"Come over to Schober’s today, and I will sing you a cycle of horrifying songs. I am anxious to know what you will say about them. They have cost me more effort than any of my other songs."

This was Franz Schubert’s invitation to the first reading of Winterreise.

Through 24 exquisitely crafted songs, Franz Schubert's Winterreise evolves from a familiar story of unrequited love into an exploration of alienation and the sense of irreconcilability between self and world.

Composed in 1828, it remains a work of elegant simplicity, for voice and piano, and enigmatic depth as its melodies and words lead performers and listeners to new points of arrival and departure each time around the song cycle. Set against the backdrop of winter, it reminds us of the inextricably of human emotion and meaning, and the rhythms of nature.

Join us as we journey to the edge of the known through Schubert's Winterreise.

About the performers

Andrew Munn was born in Palo Alto in 1986 and grew up in Pennsylvania. He studied voice and environmental studies at the University of Michigan. He studied with Dawn Upshaw and Sanford Sylvan at Bard College and Juilliard. He has performed leading roles at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Salzburg State Opera, Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, and Carnegie Hall

Former Musical Assistant to Michael Tilson Thomas, Peter Grunberg has appeared as a piano soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, performed at the Aix-en-Provence, Salzburg, and Tanglewood festivals, and has collaborated in recital with Frederica von Stade, Thomas Hampson, and Joshua Bell.
