The Language of Home: A Memoir Reading and Conversation with Award-Winning Author Yia Vang

Join award-winning author Yia Vang for The Language of Home, a reading and conversation inspired by her debut memoir, In Yer’s Kitchen: Memoir of a Hmong Daughter.

In this intimate talk, Yia explores how food carries the stories of who we are. A mother’s cooking can hold an entire history of migration, resilience, and love. Through story and reflection, she invites us to see food as its own language, one spoken through care, memory, and the quiet gestures that connect generations.

Drawing from her mother’s kitchen and her journey as a writer, Yia reflects on what it means to write from a cultural lens within English and how rhythm, memory, and emotion live inside words that language alone cannot fully contain. This event invites readers to rediscover the meaning of home as something we carry in our bodies, in our traditions, and in the meals we share.

Join Yia for an afternoon of reading, conversation, and connection, followed by a Q&A and book signing.
