Course Description:
This course that will be held on a weekly basis online starting Tuesday, August 5th at 6:30pm and explores the historical, cultural, religious, and political dynamics of the Middle East and the broader Muslim world. It provides an in-depth analysis of key historical events, including the rise of Islam, the Ottoman Empire, colonialism, and the modern geopolitical landscape. The course also examines contemporary issues such as governance, economic development, conflicts, identity, and the role of religion in society.
Students will engage with primary and secondary sources, scholarly debates, and media representations to develop a nuanced understanding of the region. Topics will also include the diversity of Muslim societies, the impact of globalization, and the relationship between the Middle East and the wider world. By the end of the course, students will have a well-rounded perspective on the complexities shaping the region today and past the mainstream media limited narrative.
