About this Event

Film 360/VR/MR - Los Angeles is proud to co-host "A JOURNEY THROUGH EMERGING TECH for Journalists" with the Asian American Journalists Association - LA Chapter (AAJA-LA). It's a FREE event bringing journalists and XR professionals together!

We'll explore immersive journalism and how it benefits the traditional ways we consume information. Hear from Nani Walker, LA Times Immersive Producer on how they recently incorporated AR into the relaunched Food Section and what's next. Nani was also a Storyteller in Residence at McClatchy Ventures Lab, where she co-directed an award-winning augmented reality series on migration along the Mexico-U.S. border. Her work has been featured in the Atlantic, Washington Post, National Geographic, BBC, San Francisco Chronicle and other news outlets. Walker is an alumna of the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and Boston University.

Robert Hernandez, Digital Journalism Professor and JOVRNALISM Founder will discuss the recent AR/XR experiences around homelessness and undocumented migrants that he and his class produced.

Robert is an Associate Professor of Professional Practice at USC Annenberg. His most recent work includes Augmented Reality, Wearables/Google Glass and Virtual Reality. He and his students produce XR experiences under their brand: JOVRNALISM™. He has worked for seattletimes.com, SFGate.com, eXaminer.com, La Prensa Gráfica, among others. He has served on boards that have included Chicas Poderosas, InquireFirst and the Online News Association. He is a Journalism 360 ambassador and a lifetime member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. He is the recipient of SPJ’s 2015 Distinguished Teaching in Journalism Award.
