A BAD TIME TO BREAK IN? CREATIVITY, CAPITAL & THE COST OF ENTRY
Overview
A BAD TIME TO BREAK IN? CREATIVITY, CAPITAL & THE COST OF ENTRY
Once dismissed, Blaxploitation films like Shaft and Superfly are now seen as radical acts of self-representation. They gave Black audiences heroes, style, and agency, while also sparking debate about stereotypes and control. Today, we revisit this era not to replicate it, but to reclaim narrative power.
This event challenges the digital commodification of Black culture and explores how creators can build platforms that reflect their voice, value, and ownership. It reminds us that Black cinema has always been about more than entertainment. It’s been about identity, resistance, legacy and the honor we hold to that lineage while pushing it forward.
Key Panel Topics:
- Myth or Reality: Is now a good time to enter creative industries?
- The “Let Me In” Moment: Breaking through gatekeeping in media, funding, and opportunity.
- From Scripts to Startups: How storytelling and entrepreneurship mirror each other.
- Building Ecosystems for Equity: Residencies, fellowships, and film camps as launchpads.
- Monetary Support & Infrastructure: Funding, stipends, and sustainable creative careers.
