Creating a Visual Diary

Would you like to develop a regular journaling practice that is flexible, creative, and unique to you? Keeping a visual diary is both a useful personal practice, and a valuable tool for artists to develop their own voice, style, and techniques. You don’t have to know how to draw, you can work in any medium, and it can be as expansive or as minimal as your life requires.

In this workshop we’ll discuss what makes a visual diary, look at examples, and talk about ideas for making your own, and then you’ll have time to experiment. (If you are an experienced visual journaler or have attended one of these workshops before, you're welcome to get started as soon as you arrive!) Paper and drawing materials will be provided, but feel free to bring anything of your own that you’re accustomed to working with - sketchbook, tablet, other materials.

All ages welcome. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult or responsible tween/teen.

If you have questions or access needs, please use the "contact organizer" button.

Hosted by Lisa Hsia, a writer and artist based here in Oakland. See her work here: https://www.instagram.com/lisa.hsia.art/

This workshop may be cancelled 2 days before the event if enrollment is low. In that case, you'll be notified and refunded.

Frequently asked questions

Is there parking in the area?

Metered parking is available on College Avenue and side streets. There is also some free parking on side streets. If planning to stay the full 2 hours, you may need to run out to refill meters or repark your car partway through the workshop.

Can I get to the shop via public transit or by bike?

Rockridge BART is 0.7 mi away. There is an AC Transit bus stop directly in front of the shop, as well as one of those U-shaped bike racks.

Tell me more about the physical setup/layout of the event.

We will be working at folding tables and chairs in the back area of the shop. These will likely be placed close together (and close to walls/other furniture) depending on number of attendees. Please contact us with specific access needs and we will do our best to accommodate!

Is there a restroom onsite?

Yes.

May I bring my own materials?

Yes -- but NO GLITTER and no messy/wet media unless you have checked first with the organizer.

I am not artistic. Are you sure I can do this?

YES!
