The immediacy of the model’s presence encourages close observation and instinctive decision-making, leading to work that is expressive and real. This hands-on interaction brings a sense of movement and authenticity that’s hard to achieve otherwise.

The sculpting process typically starts by analyzing the model’s proportions and pose. A wire armature is built to support the structure, and clay is gradually applied to develop the form to a one-third life size, 750mm tall figure. From there, the artist refines the shapes focusing on anatomical accuracy and expressive detail that give the sculpture its final character.
