3CSN's Summer 2021 multi-part Design Labs created by and for California Community College educators

About this event

This summer, we are offering the following free multi-part online design labs. For your convenience, you may register for multiple labs with this single registration form.

Participants who attend and complete all parts of a lab will earn a professional learning badge.

Descriptions and Dates:

Hello, Is it Me You're Looking For?: designing an ePortfolio-centered course - Tuesdays & Thursdays - June 15, 17, 22, 24, 29 - 12 PM - 1:30 PM (with an optional lab from 1:30 PM to 2 PM)

Looking for a way to engage and assess students that can showcase their personal and professional growth throughout college and beyond? Want the space to try it out in community with educators across the state?

Join 3CSN coordinators Kelan Koning, Diana Bonilla Hein, past participant Trang Abeid, and students for this design lab to learn about the various possibilities for, and value of, e-portfolios, and to design an e-portfolio-centered course of your own.

Wix, Google Sites, and Portfolium will be explored as options.

Ungrading in the Classroom - July 7-9, 10 AM - 11:30 AM

Want to learn equitable ways to assess student learning and build a more inclusive classroom? Join Jennifer Escobar (Moreno Valley College) for this three-part Zoom series. Sessions will include ungrading syllabi, ungrading classroom assignments, and discussing ungrading/grading with students and colleagues.

Building a Student-Centered Canvas Course - July 7, 9, 12, 14, 16 - 1 PM - 2:30 PM

In this five-part design lab, facilitated by Josh Miller (Peer Online Course Reviewer and Communications Studies Department Chair, Los Angeles Valley College), you will work on designing an accessible, student-centered course, in community with educators across the state, considering backward design, rich content editor, accessibility, syllabus, pages, modules, and more.

We Can Do This: learning & teaching online, through crisis, & beyond - July 12-15, 2 PM - 3:30 PM

Teaching online, thinking about what to bring forward as we transition back to in-person instruction? We can do this, together! Let’s leverage this year of change in course delivery to get to the core of effective teaching: designing for equity and student engagement. Join 3CSN Coordinators Sarah Sullivan (Mission College) and Nicole Bryant Lescher (College of the Redwoods) and faculty colleagues from across the state in this four-part design lab.

We will build relationships and knowledge together, focusing on effective online pedagogy and student-centered active learning, and directly apply our learning and metacognitive reflections to redesign elements of our fall courses.

It Takes Two: students and faculty co-creating connected learning experiences - July 13, 15, 20, 22 - 10:30 AM - 12 PM

Students and educators alike will reconnect with their “why” and consider how learning works in online and face-to-face learning environments from an educator as well as a student perspective, ultimately creating partnerships that will provide a sense of belonging in academic environments as well as greater success college-wide. Students are strongly encouraged to register.

Leadership in Times of Transition - August 6, 13, 20, 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Join 3CSN Lead Coordinator Rebecca Moon-Stone for this three- part lab that explores what it means to lead during times of transition. Together we will learn what our level of influence is as well as how to access our leadership ability and take it to the next level.

Creating & Sustaining Communities of Practice - August 19, 24, 26, 12 -1:30pm

Many campuses are creating virtual Communities of Practice (CoPs) to support their ongoing learning and sharing. Join 3CSN's Executive Director Deborah Harrington and 3CSN Network Director Jessica Cristo for a three-part series that will explore the theory of CoPs, including how to create a sustainable CoP as we transition to face-to-face.

Now More Than Ever: project/problem -based learning to re-engage students - August 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 2:30 - 4 PM

In this six-session design lab, facilitated by Valerie Foster (Biology Professor at Pasadena City College), you will participate in a scaffolded process to design a contextualized and engaging project-based module or problem-based learning activity to implement in fall. Together with colleagues across the state, you will become part of a learning community which will enhance the creative process, provide opportunities for constructive feedback, and offer troubleshooting support to maximize success with this high-impact practice.
