Advanced Octalysis Gamification Design Workshop: 3 Progressive Day Sessions (4 hours/day) - ONLINE

For most of the year, Gamification Pioneer & Author Yu-kai Chou travels around the world to give private workshops to corporations so they could apply Gamification, Behavioral Design, and the Octalysis Framework to drive business ROI. This is the exact process that companies regularly pay Yu-kai Chou over $70,000 USD to execute on. However, the price point of the private workshops ($8000/day) may still be more difficult for smaller companies and individuals who also want to learn directly from Yu-kai to level up their organizations.

As a result, for 1-2 times a year Yu-kai hosts a public 3-Day Workshop ONLINE so everyone can apply the right gamification principles into their projects. These quaterly workshops are specifically catered to audience members from both the US and European continents, and are broken down into three 4-hour sessions in consecutive days.

In this workshop Yu-kai Chou will share the exact 5 intricate steps he goes through to design experiences for Octalysis Group clients (such as Google, LEGO, Huawei, Accenture). These 5 Steps are: 

Step 1: Octalysis Strategy Dashboard
Step 2: Brainstorming & Ideation Methodology
Step 3: Power/Ease Feature List
Step 4: Battleplan Spreadsheet
Step 5: Concept Wireframes/Storyboarding

Since audience members are at different levels on their journey, these three days are modular and attendees can choose to just attend one day over another. 

Day 1: December 4, 8AM to 12PM (noon) Pacific Time. Attendees will participate in the livestream with Yu-kai's video presentation as well as dynamic work slides (with Yu-kai also interacting and answering questions from attendees). This day will be introducing and expanding on the 8 Core Drives within the Octalysis Framework.

Day 2: December 5, 8AM to 12PM (noon) Pacific Time. Day 2 will be focused on the Octalysis Strategy Dashboard and understand how to define all the correct components to start a full gamification design project. Then attendees will work start the Octalyiss Brainstorming/Ideation process for their own project.

Day 3: December 6, 8AM to 12PM (noon) Pacific Time. Day 3 attendees will learn and apply the Octalysis Brainstorming/Ideation methodlogy, PE (Power Ease) Feature List, the Battleplan Spreadsheet, and Concept Wireframes to completely push out a streamlined and engaging gamified experience.

Overview of the ONLINE Workshop

Gamification is a field that is substantially taking off in today's world. Today there are hundreds of Gamification Case Studies with ROI stats in the double or triple digits. However, there still are many misconceptions and misunderstanding on gamification, especially when it comes to actually implementing good gamification design into your own projects. 

This workshop will be about how to implement great gamification design that drives numbers through Yu-kai Chou's Octalysis Framework. Published in late 2012, the Octalysis Gamification Framework has become a global standard, being translated into over 18 different languages, and transforming many businesses throughout the world. 

Yu-kai Chou Speech

The premise of Octalysis is that an experience is not motivating simply because it has "game mechanics" and "game elements" in them. Every single game in the market has game mechanics in it, but most games are still unsuccessful. It is unrealistic to think that, once you take those game elements (such as Points, Badges, and Leaderboards) that are even found in boring games and plug them into your project, your project will automatically be fun and successful.

Instead of focusing on various game mechanics and game elements, Octalysis focuses on the 8 Core Drives, which are our inner drives that motivate us to do our every action. Everything we do is based on one or more of these 8 Core Drives; which means that if none of these 8 Core Drives are present, there is no motivation, and no behavior happens.

Among the 8 Core Drives, there are also different "natures" of those Core Drives. White Hat Core Drives make people feel powerful and in control, but there is no sense of urgency; Black Hat Core Drives make people feel urgent, obsessed, even addicted, but in the long-run it leaves a bad taste in their mouths because they are not in control of their own actions. Extrinsic Motivation Core Drives motivates users through rewards, goals, and achievements, but users don't necessarily enjoy the activity itself and may drop out after obtaining the reward; whereas Intrinsic Motivation Core Drives motivate users because they want to enjoy the experience - they would even pay in order to do the activity.

This workshop will focus on how to use the Octalysis Framework to design motivating experiences that bring out our 8 Core Drives to completely meet your business objectives, whether it would be to close sales quickly, raising funding for your organization, motivate employees, create obsessive users, becoming a better parent, or motivate yourself towards good habits.

Day 2: Applying the Octalysis Strategy Dashboard + Gamification Ideation/Brainstorming Process (Pacific Time: 8AM - 12PM Dec 5)

Day 2 will be about combining the knowlege of the 8 Core Drives from Day 1 to the Octalysis Strategy Dashboard, which is the first step of every client engagement with the Octalysis Group. Then the group will practice and apply the Octalysis Ideation/Brainstorming methodology.

  8. Introduction of the Octalysis Brainstorming/Ideation Process
  9. Group Ideation work-through of the Discovery Phase
  10. Group Ideation walk-through of the Onboarding Phase
  11. Group Ideation walk-through of the Scaffodling Phase
  12. Group Ideation walk-through of the Endgame Phase 
  13. Introduction of the Power-Ease Feature List through Spreadsheets

Day 3: PE Feature List, Battleplan Spreadsheets, and Concept Wireframes (Pacific Time: 8AM - 12PM Dec 6)

Day 3 will be focusing on narrowing down all the brainstormed features from Day 2 and understanding how to pick out the best ideas and how to design the inner mechanics of how all the concepts work together. This will include the Octalysis Battleplan Spreadsheet, which defines concepts such as the Reward Schedule, Activity Loop, and Balanced Economy etc. Attendees will also see examples of concept wireframes and best principles in that.

There are no requirements for the Day 1 Workshop. Sign-up with an open mind, ready to be blown. There will be many overlaps with Yu-kai's book Actionable Gamification. However, it will serve as a good review, and we will spend some time applyinng the 8 Core Drives to your specific project. Be sure to come with questions.

For Day 2, the Day 1 Workshop completion is not necessarily required. However, the attendee must have read Yu-kai's book Actionable Gamification, watched all his Udemy Courses, Beginner's Guide to Gamification, OR have consumed the higher level Octalysis Prime(.com) content.

For Day 3, the attendee should have at least attended a Day 2 workshop with Yu-kai Chou either this round, or in the past workshops. Day 3 is meant to be extremely detailed, and it would be much more rewarding if the attendee has the knowledge and preparation from previous days in the workshop.

Why Does Gamification Work?

Gamification is described by Yu-kai Chou as "Human-Focused Design," as opposed to "Function-Focused Design." Most design systems are function focused - assuming people will do the activities and simply optimizes for efficiency. Even traditional UX/UI/Usability focuses on making tasks "easier" to do, assuming users already have motivation, instead of creating motivation itself. Human-Focused Design optimizes for human emotion and motivation, ultimately creating behavior that drives business results.

The reason why we term this craft gamification is because the gaming industry is the first to master Human-Focused Design. There is no real purpose for playing a game. You have to do your taxes, go to work, go to school, but you never have to play a game. The instant a game is no longer fun, people leave the game - they play another game, check their emails, or go on Youtube.

About the Speaker
