Join us for an action-packed weekend with new whale science, a newly updated short film on the SBCWHA, and an unforgettable wildlife cruise!

Join us Friday, November 21st at 6:30 PM at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach by IHG for a special evening celebrating the 2-Year Anniversary of the Santa Barbara Channel Whale Heritage Area!


Meet local whale researchers, biologists, and advocates as they share the latest whale science from our channel including an ANCIENT WHALE FOSSIL found at one of the local beaches. Enjoy the premiere of a brand-new short film by wildlife filmmaker Adam Ernster, showcasing this year’s remarkable successes of the SBCWHA.

Celebrate the magnificent whales and dolphins that call our waters home, and join us for an incredible wildlife cruise aboard Island Packers to see these animals in the wild.

  • Alisa Shulman Janiger : Alisa Schulman-Janiger is a marine biologist, cetacean researcher, educator, and Research Associate at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. She has been the Director/Coordinator of the full-season shore-based ACS/LA Gray Whale Census and Behavior Project (Point Vicente) since 1984. Alisa is Co-Founder and Lead Research Biologist of the California Killer Whale Project; she has been photo-identifying California killer whales, archiving sightings, and studying distribution, natural history, and behavior (over 45 years). She is an instructor for Cabrillo Whalewatch, training naturalists. She has been a whale researcher/naturalist in southern California, Monterey Bay, Alaska, Massachusetts, and Baja California, and a NOAA staff scientist/marine mammal observer (Alaska to California), and is a responder for the NOAA Fisheries Large Whale Entanglement Response Team and California Stranding Response Team. She was head marine biologist/educator on LAUSD’s Sea Education Afloat for 10 years, and taught marine biology, advanced marine science, and biology in San Pedro High School’s Marine Science Magnet for 21 years.
