The rapid pace of advancement in single-cell genomics has empowered major growth in many areas of the biological sciences. Within recent years, measurements with single-cell resolution have revealed a detailed landscape comprised of heterogeneous features representing both normal function and disease states. Single-cell approaches have enabled the development of new hypotheses and currently provide mechanistic insights into tissue heterogeneity, disease microenvironments, immune function, and enable the study of rare sub-populations. Recent developments have extended the toolkit of single-cell analysis by integrating a range of other omics approaches, such as chromatin profiling, DNA methylation, and protein expression profiling. Together, these single-cell technologies are increasingly recognized as essential tools to study heterogeneous biological processes and have had major impacts on virtually all areas of biomedical research. Importantly, successful application of these tools and methods spans traditional disciplines, frequently requiring expertise in biomedical sciences, computational biology, bioengineering, chemistry, and other fields. In particular, analysis of the large-scale data sets resulting from single-cell analysis represents a major challenge which requires advanced capabilities in in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, and data science for which standards are still rapidly evolving.

The Gulf Coast Cluster for Single Cell Omics (GCC SCOC) was established in 2019 to address these challenges, and to leverage the resources and complementary expertise within the Texas Medical Center. Following the first annual symposium in 2020, this second annual GCC SCOC Symposium has been organized to promote and extend single-cell research at the regional and national level. The symposium aims to bring together groups with diverse backgrounds and expertise levels, from developers to users of single-cell technologies. This second annual meeting features online sessions focused on technical advances in single-cell approaches, computational methods for data analysis and modeling, and the application of single-cell technologies in biomedically relevant fields such as cancer, immunology, development, neuroscience, and functional genomics, all underlying a range of pathologies.

In addition to invited keynote and local speakers, oral presentations will be selected from submitted abstracts. With the poster session, there are ample opportunities for trainees and all other participants to present and discuss their work. Thanks to the considerable commercial and academic success of single-cell approaches, our symposium also provides a unique platform for networking and close interactions with experts from both academia and industry. Altogether, we aim to foster interaction and collaboration among groups whose research is related to all aspects of single-cell biology.
