2026 Block Kids Competition

By NAWIC Greater Des Moines

Overview

Does your kid love building things? Does your kid love to use their imagination? Sign them up for our Block Kids Competition.

The Greater Des Moines Chapter #80 of the National Association of Women In Construction (NAWIC) is sponsoring the annual Block Kids competition, a national building competition. The purpose of the competition is to introduce children in Grades K – 6 to the construction industry in an effort to create awareness of the many job/career opportunities in the construction industry. The goal of Block Kids is not only to plant the seed for workforce development, but also to instill the sense of pride and accomplishment inherent in “building their project for real.”

This competition uses 100 building blocks, a rock, string, foil, and/or poster board as building materials. Each entrant is his or her own “General Contractor” for 45 minutes. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards will be given, with the winning project going on to a Regional competition, and the winner from Regionals moving on to the National competition where more prizes may be awarded!

While parents or chaperones are encouraged to attend, they will be kept separate from the kids during the construction process. Strict guidelines are set and anyone who receives ANY outside help with their construction project during the competition will be disqualified.
