About this event

Since 1990 companies in Massachusetts using large quantities of toxic chemicals have used toxics use reduction (TUR) planning to identify safer, affordable and effective alternatives to their use of toxic chemicals. Certified TUR planners are an essential part of the success of this planning process. Indeed, all plans must be reviewed and signed by a certified planner.

To become a TUR planner, most eligible professionals must attend this Toxics Use Reduction Planner Certification Course and pass an exam administered by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. Learn more about the eligibility requirements for TUR planners at the MassDEP website.

    Course Overview

The course begins with a kick-off meeting on Wednesday September 3. Participants then have 6 weeks to complete the online portion of the course at their own pace, which thoroughly covers the theory and regulations associated with TUR planning. After completion of the online portion, participants gather in person at TURI for four day-long classes to put the theory to practice. Participants learn directly from veteran TUR planners and work together on a practicum based on a real manufacturing operation. At the end of the course, eligible participants are ready to take the MassDEP exam to become TUR planners.

    Frequently asked questions

Can anyone do only the online portion?

YES! if you are a current planner you can receive 20 CEUs for attending IF you have not done this in the past 5 years. Anyone can participate in the online content to help build their skill in finding actionable solutions to toxic chemical use. Cost for online only is $500.

What is the difference between General and Limited practice planners?

General practice planners can develop and certify toxics use reduction plans for any facility, while limited practice planners can only provide those services only to the facility where they are employed.

I'm not sure if I'm eligible to be certified as a TUR planner - what do I do?

MassDEP has guidance on planner eligibility (see link above). Additionally, feel free to reach out to TURI's training team to get guidance on this or any other questions you may have at: training@turi.org

Do I have to attend the kick-off meeting?

Ideally we want everyone to attend this Zoom meeting where we will discuss course access, timing and expectations. If you cannot attend we can discuss these issues with you off line or share the meeting recording. Contact training@turi.org if needed.

Are there attendance requirements for the in-person classes?

Yes. You are expected to attend every in-person class and participate in your small group practicum work. You can miss half of one day, but will not receive a certificate of completion if you miss more than two half day sessions of the in-person classes.
