Seminar Title: Program Management Tools for Micron’s $100B Manufacturing Expansion

Seminar Abstract: Micron is pioneering efforts to bring semiconductor chip manufacturing facilities to the United States. Micron is the only U.S. based manufacturer of memory and data storage chips such as dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), flash memory, and solid-state drives (SSDs). In 1981, the company moved from consulting to manufacturing with the completion of its first wafer fabrication unit in Boise Idaho, producing 64K DRAM chips. With the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act, Micron announced its pledge to invest billions in new manufacturing within the US. In September 2022, Micron announced they would invest $15 billion in a new facility in Boise, Idaho and more recently Micron launched a $100 billion expansion in Syracuse, New York that will bring 50,000 new jobs.

Mr. Terry Burr, and Carson Henry will provide a basic overview of Micron including a brief historical perspective and current expansion efforts for construction of the new facilities in Syracuse, NY. Terry and Carson will discuss typical considerations and challenges that are faced during planning stages and when executing the launch of a new manufacturing facility. The presentation will include general project management principles, best practices, and standard processes and/or procedures. For example, topics may include capital-intensive equipment procurement and/or production strategies, enterprise resource planning, supply chain management, process monitoring/ optimization or predictive maintenance technologies, workforce training and hiring, etc. Business leaders, entrepreneurs, as well as students and faculty interested in learning about the process of developing capabilities and facilities needed to manufacture new innovative technology products, particularly with relevance to the semiconductor industry, should attend this seminar.

Presentor Bios:

Terry Burr is the Director of Construction Procurement at Micron. He has over 30 years of experience in construction and construction procurement. Before coming to Micron Terry was the Global PMO Construction Director at Dell Corporation.

Terry brings extensive experience as a leader in Procurement for Construction, including several Fab related projects at Intel, and Procurement leadership at Parsons.

Terry has an undergraduate degree in Construction Science from Tuskegee University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Alabama.

Outside of work, Terry stays busy with his family including 2 boys who are active in youth sports.

Carson Henry is a semiconductor leader who has worked for Micron in various roles of increasing responsibility over the last two decades. These roles include assignments at Micron’s operations in Virginia and Singapore where he led all phases of the operations and participated in expansions of the high-volume manufacturing sites. For the last year, he has led the Strategic Program Management team for Micron’s U.S. expansions. He has also served as a co-sponsor of Micron’s Smart Manufacturing & Artificial Intelligence program and sponsored global innovations such as tool-utility-matrix integration and end-to-end cost management.

Carson is an advocate for all and has sponsored improvements in our hiring processes to ensure all leaders follow best practices in recruitment to hire top talent and protect merit-based opportunities. He also is committed to building an engaging workplace culture, ensuring all team members are seen, heard, valued and respected, as reflected in his sponsorship of employee resource group site chapters. In the community, he’s passionate about ending child hunger and invests his time toward causes to address this issue.

Carson holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Rochester and an MBA from George Washington University.

He’s a father to two boys, age 9 and 11, and enjoys skiing, biking, tennis and reading in his time off.
