The rules are simple: build the coolest, fastest derby car you can using a set of wheels (provided) and a can (that's on you), and see how you measure up against the competition! Races will take place in heats, and prizes will be awarded for fastest overall car, flashest car, most surprising design, etc.

Teams can pick up their build kits from Black Spruce Brewing Company's taproom during regular business hours beginning on Tuesday, July 22.

Frequently asked questions

What do I absolutely have to use for my car?

All participating cars must utilize one (1) aluminum beverage can in its entirety (not provided, any size allowed), though the can does not need to remain intact to be eligible to race. You gotta use the wheels and axles provided, too, and those suckers need to stay intact.

How about the car dimensions?

The overall length of the car shall not exceed seven inches, and the width of the car shall not exceed 2.75 inches (about the width of a can). The car must have 1.75 inches clearance between the wheels and 3/8" inches clearance underneath the body so that your car will fit the track.

How heavy can my car be?

The maximum allowable weight will be 20 ounces (1.25 pounds, potentially subject to change).

Can the provided wheels and axles be altered?

You may not cut, drill, bevel or round the provided wheels. You may remove seams or imperfections, should they exist. Axles can be altered, polished and lubricated.

Will there be a car inspection before the competion?

Yeah, for sure. Any cars that do not meet the abovementioned criteria will be disqualified. Once a car passes inspection and is entered into the race, only race officials may touch it. Only inspected/approved cars will be allowed to compete. You'll have five minutes to repair any last-minute damage.
