Wear of materials: From fundamentals to applications

From early human history to the modern era, wear and the pursuit of improved wear resistance have been central to technological advancement. Despite centuries of interest, the complexity of wear mechanisms continues to challenge our understanding, limiting the development of more durable materials. In the 2025 Alloy Design Workshop, we will delve into this intricate topic as it applies to metals. Beginning at the single-asperity scale, we’ll explore fundamental wear mechanisms and extend our discussion to practical applications across diverse fields such as heavy industry, biomedical materials, and micro-machining. Both experimental and simulation-based approaches will be highlighted. We’ll also introduce and critically evaluate cutting-edge strategies for enhancing wear resistance. With insights from leading experts in the field, this workshop aims to not only deepen our understanding of wear phenomena but also offer innovative, practical solutions for real-world challenges.

VENUE & ACTIVITIES:

The Alloy Design Workshop 2025 will take place in the Chipman Room at MIT on Friday, December 5th, 2025. The event will also be broadcast live on zoom for attendees who are unable to join in person.

Complimentary lunch, coffee and refreshments will be provided during the workshop for all in-person attendees, together with a unique opportunity for networking with all invited speakers and participants!

REGISTRATION:

To take full advantage of the program and opportunities, register as an in-person attendee and be an integral part of the 2025 Alloy design workshop! Make sure to register early and reserve one of the 60 seats available.

Cannot travel to MIT? You can still follow presentations live by registering as a remote attendee. Zoom link to the event will be provided closer to the time of the event.

PAST ALLOY DESIGN WORKSHOPS

The Alloy Design Workshop is a single-day workshop at MIT, focusing on different aspects of alloy design. This is an invitation-only meeting with Gordon-style, discussion-oriented presentations, where leaders of the field get together to share and discuss new ideas for an audience of grad students and early career metallurgical engineers. Established in 2017, the Alloy Design Workshop has already covered a variety of topics:

  • 2024: Metals and life: Biocompatibility, biocorrosion, oligodynamic effect and beyond
  • 2023: Gradients & Multi-gradients metals: a discussion on design guidelines, processing, properties
  • 2022: Guidelines for alloy and microstructure design for hydrogen embrittlement resistance
  • 2021: Exploring design guidelines for superior Titanium alloys
  • 2020: Damage-resistant steel design: Exploring the limits of metastability-engineering
  • 2019: Micro-mechanics informed alloy design: overcoming scale-transition challenges
  • 2018: New guidelines in alloy design: from atomistic simulations to combinatorial metallurgy
  • 2017: Sustainability through alloy design: challenges and opportunities
