First Panel -- MACRA; Panelists Bio

Heather Jacobson (Moderator)- Heather Jacobson is a Strategic Services Associate for Duke Health Population Health Management Office. In this role she leads the post-acute care strategy for Duke Connected Care, including operationalizing the Duke HOPE Skilled Nursing Facility Collaborative. Prior to this role, she was a Quality Reporting Consultant for Duke Health Private Diagnostic Clinic, PLLC, the multi-specialty faculty practice plan for Duke. There she managed the ambulatory Meaningful Use program, responsible for over 1,200 eligible providers. Before to coming to Duke, Heather worked as a speech language pathologist, spending over 8 years providing interdisciplinary care across a variety of healthcare settings. Heather received both her Master in Health Administration and MS in Speech Language Pathology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her BA in Speech and Hearing Science from The Ohio State University. In addition to volunteering as a THEF board member, Heather also volunteers on the Advisory Committee for First Pages, a nonprofit organization serving the literacy needs of children under age 5 in Durham, NC. She also volunteers as a Fleet Feet running program mentor for distances ranging from 5K to full marathon.

Carol Beehler- Carol is a Manager in PwC’s Health Industries Advisory practice with over 30 years of industry experience in health care operations and management including physician and nursing practice, hospital performance improvement, care management, Medicare regulatory compliance, quality, benchmarking, and patient access/flow. A former C-suite executive (CNO & COO) and physician practice CEO, Carol has experience in the dynamics of organizational success during rapid environmental change, developing leaders to continue the transformation of the organization. She has industry experience with EPIC, Cerner, and McKesson EHR.Her eleven years of consulting experience has been in the areas of clinical operations, regulatory reviews (RAC, MAC), disease & care management programs, length of stay/utilization management, medical homes, clinical outcomes, documentation integrity, labor productivity, physician alignment, Medicare/caid compliance, and HIT implementation across a variety of academic medical centers, community hospitals, physician practices and ambulatory care services.

Dr. John Paat- He is the Associate Chief Medical Officer and Director for Quality and Safety for the Duke Private Diagnostic Clinic. The Private Diagnostic Clinic (PDC) is a physician led organization that represents and supports the clinical activities of approximately 1600 physicians and providers that work at Duke Health. John has physician oversight of quality reporting including Meaningful Use and MACRA, Joint Commission accreditation, PCMH certification and quality and safety activities within the PDC. Dr. Paat is the on the Operations Committee and Chair of the Performance Improvement Committee of Duke Connected Care, an accountable care organization that is responsible for coordinating high quality care for over 45,000 covered lives. He is also Chair of the Board of Managers for Project Access of Durham County that coordinates care for uninsured patients in Durham County. Previously, he was the Associate Medical Director for MMSI, a division of Mayo Clinic Health Solutions, an administrative organization that works with large employers to enhance benefit design and medical management programs.

Jennifer Gasperini- Jennifer Gasperini is a senior policy advisor at the National Association of ACOs (NAACOS) where she works on federal regulatory issues facing ACOs. She brings 10 years of health policy experience on both the state and national levels. She came to NAACOS from the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) where she served as the director of health policy. Before joining the NCMS, Ms. Gasperini worked at the National Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) where she focused on federal legislative and regulatory issues pertaining to physician quality and payment including ACO issues, and value-based payment programs such as PQRS and the Value Based Payment Modifier. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism, minor in political science from the Pennsylvania State University and a master’s degree in legislative affairs from the George Washington University.


Second Panel -- Healthcare Reform [Providing the Right Care in the Right Setting]; Panelists Bio

Sarah Schauman (Moderator)-Mrs.Sarah Schauman is a Senior Consultant in the Consulting Services Division of Nexera with an extensive background in project and operations management. She has been the project manager and served as an operational lead for with lead Performing Provider Sites (PPSs) in the New York State and Texas DSRIP prograMrs. Prior to joining the Nexera team, Mrs. Schauman was the Practice Supervisor for the Gynecologic Oncology division at Weill Cornell Medical College - New York Presbyterian Hospital where she oversaw the operations, clinical research, and staff management for the division. Prior to her position at Weill Cornell Medical College, Mrs. Schauman worked in the Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Mrs. Schauman received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Philosophy at Denison University and her Master of Arts from New York University in Bioethics.

Cody Hand- Cody is the North Carolina Hospital Association’s Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Deputy General Counsel. He serves as the Association’s lead lobbyist advocating and coordinating hospital advocacy on behalf of North Carolina’s hospitals before all three branches of state government. Cody joined NCHA in 2012. Prior to working at NCHA, Cody worked at the North Carolina State Senate as the Chief Policy Advisor to President Pro Tempore Phil Berger and also practiced law with his wife. Cody received his undergraduate degree in International Business Administration from Angelo State University in San Angelo, TX and his law degrees from Texas Wesleyan University (Now Texas A&M University School of Law) in Fort Worth, TX. He lives in Cary with his wife Kara, an attorney, and daughters Emmie and Maryn.

Martie Ross- Following a successful two-decade career as a healthcare transactional and regulatory attorney, Martie now serves as a trusted advisor to providers navigating the ever-expanding maze of healthcare regulations. Her deep and wide understanding of new payment and delivery systems and public payer initiatives is an invaluable resource for providers seeking to strategically position their organizations for the future. Martie identifies opportunities and develops realistic plans of action where others only see obstacles. Martie synthesizes complex regulatory schemes and explains in straightforward and practical terms their impact on providers. She has made hundreds of presentations to professional and community organizations on a broad range of industry topics. Martie provides dynamic, customized educational and planning sessions for directors, executives, and managers, and employee compliance training programs. Martie was chosen as a Missouri/Kansas Super Lawyer in 2008 and 2009. She was also chosen as one of the Best Lawyers in America® from 2005 to 2011. She has previously worked as Staff Counsel for US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia as well as a Law Clerk for Hon. Deanell Tacha, US Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.

Fred Johnson- Fred Johnson, MBA is an Assistant Professor, Department of Community & Family Medicine, Vice Chief, Division of Community Health, Director of Clinical and Care Management Services, Director of Northern Piedmont Community Care, Duke University Health System. Mr. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola College and a Master of Business Administration from Wake Forest University. He has spent 35 years organizing, initiating and managing community and economic development organizations for local, state and national enterprises. In 2003, he joined Duke’s Division of Community Health as Deputy Director and Director of Clinical and Care Management Service and is responsible for the Division’s eight primary care clinics and three care management programs involving 70,000 patients and spanning six North Carolina counties. Most recent publication is a chapter in the “The Practical Playbook” Public Health and Primary Care Together, Oxford University Press 2016. Prior to joining Duke, Fred served as Vice President of Resources for Seniors Inc. (RFS), a Raleigh, North Carolina corporation. He was with RFS for ten years, where he developed and managed adult day centers, senior centers, case management, in-home care programs, and allied health services serving daily, 1,000 clients. His publications focus on population management, intervention strategies and informatics.

Stephen Rinaldi- Steve Rinaldi is the System Vice President-Revenue Cycle for UNC Health Care. Steve joined UNC in July 2014 as Vice President & Chief Financial Officer at Caldwell UNC Health Care. Previously he was Vice President Finance/CFO at Glens Falls Hospital in Upstate New York. He received his B.S. in Accounting from the College of Saint Rose (Albany, NY) and his M.B.A from The University of Phoenix (Arizona). Steve holds multiple Accounting and Audit Certifications, and is a Licensed Flight Qualified Paramedic. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Healthcare Financial Managers Association, and is Author and National Speaker on topics of healthcare finance, and pre-hospital emergency medicine.


Third Panel -- True Accountable Care Organization (ACO); Panelists Bio

Jessica Landin (Moderator)- Jessica Landin is the Managing Director of Operations and Market GM at Evolent Health in the Triangle market of North Carolina. In her current role she oversees operations and population health for WakeMed Key Community Care, a clinically integrated network and accountable care organization (ACO). Prior to Evolent, Landin was with the Southern Atlantic Healthcare Alliance (SAHA), a collaborative of 15 North Carolina and Virgina health system members with 22 hospital facilities. Prior to SAHA, Landin was the Vice President of Marketing and the Education and Research Foundation for the American Society of Echocardiography. Landin is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) and is the immediate past president of the Triangle Healthcare Executives Forum (THEF), an official chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Daniel Costello- Mr. Costello is the Administrative Director for Duke Connected Care, Duke Health’s Accountable Care Organization. Previously, Mr. Costello served at the White House Office of Management of Budget in Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for creating and implementing federal budgets and policies. Previously, Mr. Costello served as a Presidential Management Fellow in Washington, D.C., and a United States Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala. He graduated from Boston University, completing course work at Fenway Park, and received his M.P.A. from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.

Craig Hepp- Craig is the Senior Administrator of Population Health at Vidant Health in Greenville, North Carolina. Prior to this role, he was the Director of Practice Management at the Billings Clinic, Clinic Administrator at MedMan, and Director of Benefits Health System (Montana Deaconess). He got his bachelor’s in Management Information Systems from University of Wyoming, and Masters in Business Administration from University of Iowa.

Dr. Ed Hunsinger- Dr. Hunsingeris the senior medical executive for CIGNA HealthCare’s Carolina region. In this role, Dr. Hunsinger leads physician relations, medical management and quality improvement initiatives to help improve health outcomes and manage medical costs in the region. He was integral to the collaborative between Cigna and Duke Connected Care Collaborative, a care program to improve health and lower costs in North Carolina, using clinically integrated network consisting of physicians from Duke Medicine and select local practices. This program is now one of 10 Cigna collaborative care initiatives in the Carolinas. Cigna Collaborative Care is Cigna’s approach to accomplishing the same population health goals as accountable care organizations. Dr. Hunsinger believes that a customer-centered health care delivery system that emphasizes prevention and primary care, that rewards physicians for quality of care and improved health outcomes will ultimately lead to a healthier population and lower medical costs.


Fourth Panel -- Strategic Positioning for a Transforming Industry; Panelists Bio

Heather Bogan (Moderator) - Heather brings twenty plus years’ experience in strategy and project management in the health care industry. She has experience working with health plans, integrated delivery systems, provider organizations, health care IT firms, and academic medical centers. Currently, as a Vice President with Novant Health, Heather provides strategic counsel and program management direction to health system leaders. She directs a team of top-notch program managers who lead complex, system-wide engagements that have wide-ranging scopes, everything from developing a strategy for virtual health to reengineering patient flow to building a new hospital. Heather received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. She completed her MBA at the University of Georgia in Athens and earned her Masters in Project Management degree from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. She is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and a member of the Project Management Institute as well as a certified Six Sigma Black Belt by the American Society for Quality.

Bill Schiff- Bill is the Vice President of Strategic Services and Network Development at Duke Private Diagnostic Clinic. He supports the clinical service lines of the PDC and oversees the Community PDC clinic locations. His responsibilities include the management of the PDC’s offsite practice sites and works closely with PDC clinical departments. Bill also serves as the Administrative Director for the PDC’s DukeWELL population health management platform and network planning and business development functions of the PDC.

Gary Salamido- With decades of experience and a proven track record representing North Carolina business interests at the N.C. General Assembly, Gary leads the Chamber’s lobbying, advocacy and political efforts. Before joining the North Carolina Chamber in September 2011, Gary worked 19 years at GlaxoSmithKline, the last 10 years serving as GSK’s director of state government affairs. Gary’s lobbying responsibilities covered a broad range of issues including corporate tax, environmental impact, tort and liability reform, economic development, workforce development, employment and Medicaid. Gary’s previous work experience includes serving as senior account manager, integrated healthcare markets for GSK and as director of professional and state government affairs for GlaxoWellcome. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from the Albany College of Pharmacy in Albany, N.Y. and a master’s degree in pharmacy administration from the University of Texas at Austin. Gary completed an executive residency in association management with the American Pharmaceutical Association and has experience in hospital and community pharmacy practice.

Danica Patterson- Danica Patterson is vice president of value-based care. Working with physician and administrative leaders, she is accountable for creating and implementing the organization’s approach to achieve the Triple Aim of providing better care for individuals, better health for populations, and lower healthcare costs. Her work involves identifying the strategic and operational precision required to transform the organization to a value-based model including focused efforts on payor strategies, analytics, team based care and process improvement. Prior to joining Novant Health, Patterson worked in state and federal government affairs representing hospitals and health systems in Florida and New York. She also has content expertise in certificate of need and led efforts to expand Medicaid and CHIP funding across the state of Florida. She joined Novant Health in 2007 during her tenure, has led system-wide strategic planning and business development initiatives and programs for acute and ambulatory care services, physician clinics and comprehensive patient care programs. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Patterson has a passion for reading leadership and development books, and enjoys living in Winston Salem with her husband and four children.
