The Animation Collaborative is proud to present the Animation & Story Masterclass with instructors from Pixar Animation Studios: Directing Animator Michal Makarewicz, Supervising Animator Victor Navone, Kevin O'Hara and Derek Thompson !

Geared toward students and experienced animators alike, this masterclass discusses animation from a variety of artistic perspectives, breaking down and explaining the simplest to most complex theories, ideas, and choices. This course features in-depth lectures and industry-proven techniques for handling both common and unusual animation challenges.
Using examples of work by the instructor and other professional animators, each information-packed lecture is designed to deconstruct a specific topic and show the effects that various choices and techniques can have on your work.

Michal Makarewicz joined Pixar Animation Studios in early 2003. He has animated on The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, Wall­-E, Up, Toy Story 3, Cars 2, Brave, and Inside Out. Michal has been a Supervising Animator on the Up DVD short film Dug’s Special Mission, Directing Animator on Cars 2, and a Supervising Animator on Pixar’s first half hour TV special, “Toy Story of Terror”

He has recently finished working as Directing Animator on Finding Dory, and is currently working on future projects and helping run the Pixar Internship Animation Program for 2016.

Michal was awarded an Annie for “Outstanding Character Animation in a Feature Production” by the International Animated Film Society for his work on Ratatouille.

Victor Navone is a traditional artist and computer animator. Victor was hired at Pixar Animation Studios in 2000 after his personal project Alien Song became a popular viral clip. His animation credits include Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, Wall-E, Toy Story 3, Brave, The Good Dinosaur and Finding Dory. He also acted as Supervising Animator on Inside Out.

Kevin O'Hara joined Pixar Animation Studios as an animator in September 2006. O’Hara has worked on a number of Pixar’s feature films including the Academy Award®-winning Ratatouille, WALL•E, Up, Brave, Monsters U, The Good Dinosaur, Finding Dory, and Cars 3. He has also contributed his talents to two of Pixar’s short films, Your Friend the Rat and Dug’s Special Mission. Currently, O’Hara is working on Disney•Pixar’s Incredibles 2, scheduled for release in

As an animator O’Hara’s job is to give the characters in a film personality and movement. From an early age, he was inspired to draw by Mort Drucker and Jack Davis, two artists from MAD Magazine. After seeing a re-release of Disney’s The Jungle Book, O’Hara found himself drawn to animation. He was taught and mentored by Milt Neil, a Disney animator who was known for his work on Donald Duck and in the film Dumbo. O’Hara’s first job as an animator was working at Don Bluth Studios. From there, he went on to work at a number of studios, including
Warner Bros., Ralph Bakshi, Turner Animation, James Baxter Animation, Dreamworks and Sony.

Derek Thompson received a BFA in Illustration from Otis/Parsons, and landed his first job for Dark Horse Comics while still attending college. He has worked professionally for over 25 years for a number of studios, including Rhythm & Hues, Lucasfilm, & Electronic Arts . He's been a Story Artist & Supervisor at Pixar Animation Studios for over 12 years.

Derek has worked in a variety of disciplines, including storyboarding, visual development and creature design. He has contributed to numerous film projects, including 'Men in Black', 'The Mummy' films, 'Star Wars: Episode III', 'WALL-E', 'Cars 2', 'Brave', 'John Carter' , 'The Good Dinosaur’, "Toy Story That Time Forgot”, and the upcoming ‘INCREDIBLES 2'

Tuition fee includes non-refundable registration fee of $75.00 USD. Cancellations for refund of remainder of tuition fee will be accepted up to 3 weeks before the event. From 20-10 days before the event, a cancellation fee of $100 USD will apply. From 9 days before the event and after, refunds cannot be provided. Event tickets are non-transferable.

There are no taxes, ticketing fees or service charges on top of ticket prices. However, for international attendees, there MIGHT be a "foreign transaction fee" of 1-3% applied by your credit card issuer. This fee, if any, is beyond The Animation Collaborative's control and is the purchaser's responsibility, including for any cancel, refund, or discount transactions. Financial aid is not available for this event.

The event organizer, The Animation Collaborative, reserves the right to cancel or postpone this event with reasonable discretion and for any reason (inclement weather, low enrollment, instructor illness, or any other unforeseen disruptive circumstances). In the case of cancellation by The Animation Collaborative, the full event fee, including the registration fee of $75.00 USD, will be refunded. If the event is postponed, registrants will have the option to either receive a full refund, or transfer their registration to the rescheduled event. In all cases, The Animation Collaborative shall have no further liability beyond the ticket price. We regret that any transportation and hotel costs, cancellation penalties, or any other non-recoverable costs incurred by registrants are not refundable. In the event of any unforeseen last-minute scheduling problems, we reserve the right to substitute an equivalent, qualified instructor who might not be listed in the class description.

Attendees must be over the age of 18.

A pen and paper are recommended for taking notes. Laptop/tablet computers are permitted, but please no recording with these or other devices. NO AUDIO OR VIDEO RECORDING OF THE CLASS MATERIAL OF ANY KIND IS PERMITTED. DISTRIBUTION OF THE INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES IS ALSO PROHIBITED.
