1838 Collective Talk: From Art School to the Art World
Tuesday 9 December, 6:00–8:00 PM
Altogether Otherwise

Join us for an evening of open conversation as 1838 Collective hosts a panel discussion as part of the Making and Mending exhibition.

This event explores the journey from art school to the wider art world—sharing real experiences, challenges, and opportunities faced by emerging artists in Greater Manchester. Members of 1838 Collective (Aliya, Blake, and Rebecca) will discuss how and why the collective was formed, offering perspectives on building artistic community, navigating the local art scene, and finding your footing after graduation.

The panel will cover topics such as:

  • Setting up and developing a DIY, artist-led community
  • How and why we organised the 'Making and Mending' exhibition
  • Finding studio spaces and connecting with galleries
  • Challenges of exhibiting as an emerging artist
  • Applying for open calls, residencies, and professional opportunities
  • Building networks and a connected artist community in Greater Manchester

With guest speakers (TBA) joining the discussion, this event is designed for artists, students, and anyone interested in the realities of contemporary creative practice.

Come along to gain practical advice, hear honest stories, and connect with others making their way in the art world.

About 1838 Collective

Named after the founding year of Manchester School of Art, we are an artist-led initiative that supports students and graduates as they transition from art school to the professional art world. Through free and affordable opportunities - including exhibitions, co-working sessions, workshops, and social events - we provide a supportive framework that enables emerging artists to develop confidence, expand their networks, and continue their creative practice beyond university.

This fully-funded event is part of our programme 'Making and Mending' at Altogether Otherwise. This event is free, thanks to our funder, RISE at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Making and Mending is a fine art exhibition showcasing the work of students and recent graduates from Manchester School of Art. Our exhibition and series of events aim to inspire and empower emerging artists, building a supportive community of artists and contributing to a thriving contemporary art scene in Manchester.
