Olga Romanova, a well-known human rights activist and journalist, has suddenly penned a bold piece of neo-noir. A political thriller with a touch of bloodshed, a coming-of-age drama laced with slash fanfiction. It would’ve been classic yaoi (boys’ love) if she had stuck to just male characters — but no.

The characters are instantly recognizable — you see their prototypes on your smartphone or computer screens every day, even if you'd really rather not. The action begins in 1974 in the suburbs of Leningrad, then moves on to Moscow, Kabul, Berlin, Dresden, St. Petersburg, and concludes in the very near future. It all could have happened. And maybe it really did.

A cheerful young woman from a Ukrainian village arrives to conquer the Northern Capital at the dawn of the Era of Stagnation. She tries to help people, she’s smart, she’s got grit, and she rises to dizzying heights — crossing paths with the USSR’s top woman cosmonaut, a young KGB officer on assignment in Dresden, gangsters, members of the Communist Party Central Committee, ministers, spies, and hired killers. Without making enemies or breaking the rules, by the end of her life, she turns into a monster — declaring war on her own homeland.

Following the arrest and imprisonment of her husband, Aleksey Kozlov, Romanova turned his jail diary into a book "Butyrka" (Бутырка).The same year she Romanova founded a non-profit group "Russia Behind Bars" that documents the mistreatment of prisoners in Russia. 2017 Romanova fled to Germany after political persecution.

Ольга Романова, известная правозащитница и журналистка, внезапно написала лихой неонуар. Политический триллер с элементами рубилова, драма становления со слэш-фанфиком. Это был бы типичный яой (boys’love), если бы она ограничилась только мужчинами, но нет.

Герои легко узнаваемы, каждый день вы видите их прототипы на экранах ваших смартфонов или компьютеров, даже если совсем не хотите их видеть. Действие начинается в 1974 году в пригороде Ленинграда, перемещается в Москву, Кабул, Берлин, Дрезден, Петербург, и оканчивается в очень недалёком будущем.

Всё это могло бы быть. А может быть, действительно было.

Весёлая молодая уроженка украинского села в самом начале эпохи застоя приезжает покорять Северную столицу. Она старается помогать людям, она умна, у неё есть хватка, она делает головокружительную карьеру, пересекаясь с главной советской женщиной-космонавткой, с начинающим сотрудником КГБ, командированном в Дрезден, с бандитами, с членами ЦК КПСС, министрами, шпионами и наёмными убийцами. Ни с кем не враждуя, не нарушая правил, к концу жизни она превращается в чудовище, объявившее войну своей родине.
