About this event

Food & Drink • Food

In The Immigrant Advantage, Claudia Kolker shows us how immigrants bring more than just themselves when they come to America—they bring knowledge and practices that can assist all of us. Food is one of the clearest examples. A single ingredient can carry a story: turmeric from South Asia, coffee from Ethiopia, saffron from Mexico. These special ingredients offer more than delicious nourishment—they are part of a culture's identity and storytelling, they deliver generations of health insight, and they aid survival.

When we share food, we share more than flavors—we share histories, journeys, and resilience.

Invitation

Join us for an evening of Dining Discovery where we’ll explore the role and history of turmeric in cuisine around the world—and experiment with how local ingredients can be used for simple, natural skin care products with Hillary Coleman of 1991 Greenery.

Parking is available in the lot on the East side of the center, as well as on the surrounding streets, Kalamazoo, Allen and Shepard.

If you have any questions about the class or would like to inquire about dietary accommodations, contact Matt Jones, kitchens@allenneighborhoodcenter.org or 517-999-3921 before the start of class.
