About this event
“LGBTQ Secrets of the Met” is a private tour of the homoerotic treasures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Your tour will be led by the always-engaging Professor Andrew Lear, a five-time winner of the Harvard Certificate for Excellence in Teaching, who will decipher the meanings of symbols, poses, and context while providing you with the inside scoop on what's really going on in the artwork.
LAST CHANCE! This will be the last LGBTQ Secrets tour in 2025. Professor Lear will be leading tours for Oscar Wilde Tours, his travel company.
For Lear’s peerless insights on just one of the works in the Met’s unrivaled collection, visit The Gay and Lesbian Review. Famous artists and subjects appear, but so do lesser-known artists and works whose homoerotic charge is often ignored.
You'll leave this tour with a newfound appreciation for art, history, and the hidden history that can easily be overlooked.
During this two-hour private tour, you learn the answers to these and other intriguing questions:
- Learn why the portrait of “Gertrude Stein” by Pablo Picasso was shocking and scandalous when unveiled in Paris.
- Discover the complex symbolism in “Portrait of a German Officer," a monumental painting by Marsden Hartley memorializing his lover, who died at 24
- Decipher the role male ritual bonding played in Pacific Islander society
- Hear the enduring story of Antinous, a Roman Emperor's lover who went on to become a god after his mysterious death at age 18.
- And many more hidden LGBTQ stories across time.
