Welcome to the Higher Ground Society Freedom School 2025: Camp Hill event! Join us at First Universalist Church of Camp Hill on August 16, 2025 at 10:00 AM (Central Time) for a day filled with learning, growth, and community. This is a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and expand your knowledge in a supportive environment. Tuskegee University associate professor of English, Dr. Zanice Bond, will lead us in exploring Civil Rights Movement history and its implications for the current moment. Attendees will be (re)introduced to the Gomillion v. Lightfoot case that originated in Tuskegee, Alabama. We will discuss key concepts such as voting rights, gerrymandering, redlining, and the 15th Amendment and also explore the role and responsibilities of the local individual/community. The session will feature hands-on activities and small intergenerational groups, and will conclude by reading and discussing selected poems from Reparations Now! written by Alabama’s youngest and first African American poet laureate, Ashley M. Jones. Don't miss out on this chance to be a part of something special. Registration is required. See you there!
