About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours 30 minutes

Jeff Swackhamer looks forward to meeting INPS members interested in a tour of Camp Cullom. Camp Cullom is a 90 acre property with diverse habitats including bottomland hardwoods on the banks of Spring Creek which flows into the South Fork of Wildcat Creek about a quarter mile downstream from our northern property boundary. There's also upland hardwood forest, approximately 15 acres of native warm-season prairie grass and wildflowers, two wetlands, and a pond. The amenities on the property include a lodge constructed in 1952, a nature center, a highly rated disc golf course, a maple sugar shack, a home for our caretaker, a playground, and one of the best privately owned astronomical observatories in the state of Indiana.

Jeff, our hike leader, is a lifelong resident of Clinton County. He graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. in Forestry in May of 1980. Since graduation he has been self-employed as a consulting forester helping private landowners (primarily) manage their woodlands. Traveling across Indiana through small towns and to remote locations has been an enjoyable part of my work. Rush hour for him is usually having to slow down to let a squirrel cross the road! His other passion besides forestry is raising and training Labrador retrievers. He uses them to hunt Ring-necked Pheasant. The dogs also accompany him to work in the woods as his Forester's companions.

This hike is reserved for INPS members limit of 25 registered hikers. All registered hikers should meet at the nature center and sign the INPS Release provided with registration.
