Cracking the Social and Economic Inertia Code Around Climate Action

In physics, an object’s tendency to keep doing whatever it is doing is called inertia. Social, cultural or economic inertia is made up of everyday decisions that reinforce the way we think and see the world, which includes social structures, economic frameworks, use patterns of natural resources and more. In the framework of the Food-Water-Climate Nexus master’s course at Western Colorado University, and in collaboration with Citizens for a Healthy Community (CHC) this conference is off ered to discuss how inertia builds in society. Panelists will consider what countervailing forces are developing to slow down that inertia or knock it off course to meet climate, food and water goals in time to avert human and planetary catastrophe.
