Abstract

Amgen’s growth is fueled by more than the results of the research taking place in its laboratories. Today, roughly 50 percent of Amgen’s portfolio is comprised of innovations that have come from outside of the company. Amgen’s Business Development team works with potential partners on out-licensing and in-licensing, mergers and acquisitions, corporate venture capital investments; deal integration efforts, and post-deal alliance management activities. With ever-evolving macro-economic conditions, advances in technologies, government policies, and physician behavior, business development strives to have a pulse check on real-world issues and their impact on Amgen’s overall strategy.

Dr. Syed Kazmi, Executive Director of Transactions, will explain the range and depth of expertise brought together to explore external opportunities, the thoroughness of the evaluations, the strategic thinking placed in aligning and positioning future partners, and the process to integrate new solutions into the Amgen business. He will also talk about how outside parties and Amgen interact and Amgen’s focus on acquiring the best talent.

About the Speaker

Dr. Syed Kazmi is an Executive Director in Business Development for Amgen, which is based in Thousand Oaks, California. In this role, Syed focuses on corporate mergers and acquisitions and global licensing in key therapeutic areas and on business development activities in emerging markets. He was the business development transaction lead in the acquisition of Onyx Pharmaceuticals by Amgen for ~$10B in 2013. Prior to joining Amgen in 2012, Syed served as Vice President, Business Development & Strategic Planning at Ligand Pharmaceuticals for over five years. From 1995 to 2007, he held various positions at Ligand, including Senior Director of Business Development, Director of Project Management and leader of multiple drug development teams. Prior to Ligand, Syed worked in R&D at Johnson & Johnson from 1988 to 1995, where his most recent position was Principal Scientist in endocrinology and inflammation drug development programs. From 1985 to 1988, he held his postdoctoral research positions at McMaster University, Hamilton. Syed received a Ph.D. in biochemistry from J.N. University, New Delhi, and an executive MBA from San Diego State University.
