There are few things in this world more exciting than kissing someone you really like hard on the mouth. While New York City isn’t known to be the most private city in the world (hey there, neighbor that always does her makeup on the subway), in so many ways it’s also an incredibly romantic place. Between the historic wonders, tucked away corners, and shamelessly classic spots, there’s no excuse not to unleash the randy teenager inside and remember how good it feels to lock lips. Try these on for size, you crazy romantics:
1. In the back seat of a cab
Sure, your cab driver probably thinks you’re a jerk. But, sometimes you just can’t wait to make it home. And, they’ve definitely seen worse.
2. Under the bridge
By this I mean the Brooklyn Bridge. No matter the season, Brooklyn Bridge Park has so many perfect places to cozy up with someone you like. Picnics on the beach, a walk along the greenway terrace, or watching the twinkly Manhattan skyline from Squibb Bridge are all likely to make you and your honey weak in the knees.
3. On a carousel
Who doesn’t love a little G-rated smooching now and then? Spoiler alert: I do. NYC is home to some of the coolest and oldest carousels in the country. And, kissing during a moment of child-like wonder aboard one of them is a must. If you’re more about immersive experiences, check out the Sea Glass Carousel in Battery Park. If classic is your steez, you can’t go wrong with the Central Park Carousel, which was created back in 1908. But, remember: there are usually kids around, so keep it clean.
4. On a paddle boat
If you’re living on a coastline and you’re not kissing on water, you’re doing it wrong. And, while I really love a good ferry ride, they’re far too crowded to get in a good makeout session. Instead, take your special person to Prospect Park for a paddle around the lake. Or, go super cheeseball in a rowboat at Central Park. And, there’s no excuse during the winter time: just park it on a bench near the water and make pretend you’re paddling!
5. In a thicket
Yes, I get that this sounds totally creepy. But, the best NYC makeout session I’ve ever had was under the trees after a rain shower deep in Prospect Park. Romantic? Uhduh. There are tons of hiking trails that run throughout NYC’s larger parks and are perfect for outdoorsy types to share a moment. Or, you can find a more secluded part of the Highline, which has infinitely better views of the city (if that’s what you’re into). Plus, you’ve always been wanting to show off those urban birding skills, haven’t you?
6. On a rooftop
Another classic, partly because the views of this city can be totally awe-inspiring and partly because being on a rooftop is often one of the only places where you can find some peace and quiet. If your building doesn’t have rooftop access or you’re not willing to piss off your landlord, there’s definitely a bar, restaurant, or hotel nearby that you can hit up. Do it.
7. In the stacks
Oh, dear libraries and bookstores, please don’t hate me. I’m not the only person in this world that feels a special sense of romance around beautiful words and the books they live in. So, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think the Brooklyn Public Library or Strand were perfect places to hide away and smooch someone. But please, respect your fellow bookworms.
8. Over cocktails
Our city is home to some of the best cozy cocktail lounges and speakeasy-inspired bars in the country. If you can think of a better way to finish off a first-class drink than getting to first base with your date, I’d love to hear it.
9. In an elevator
Doorways, staircases, elevators… all totally awesome spur-of-the-moment locales to sneak in a kiss. While we can all dream about swapping spit going up to a suite at The Standard, it’s probably more likely you’ll find it happening in that creepy elevator that takes you to your building’s laundry room. But hey, I’m not picky.
10. While you’re saying ‘goodbye’
As a person that spent the better part of the past three years in a long-distance relationship, I feel confident in saying that absence makes the heart grow fonder. And, 100% shameless about being that couple making out under the constellations at Grand Central Station or outside in the freezing cold at JFK’s drop-off area. These places are packed with other people, but don’t let that stop you from getting in one last kiss, forever… or just for awhile.
