Troy G. Clair is Chief of Staff to Congressman G. K. Butterfield who represents North Carolina’s First Congressional District.

During the 2016 election, Troy served as the North Carolina State Director for Hillary for America. In this role, Troy served as the chief representative of Hillary Clinton in the key battleground state of North Carolina.

His interest in southern politics brought him to Duke University where he graduated cum laude with a degree in Political Science. Troy also won the competitive Harry S. Truman scholarship for his academic achievement and commitment to public service.

In addition to his civic engagement, Troy had a passion for politics. He served as a White House Intern in President Bill Clinton’s press office. He also participated in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s (CBCF) congressional internship program. After graduating from Duke, Troy was tapped to lead CBCF’s leadership development programs.

In addition to his work on the Clinton campaign, Troy has held various roles on local, state, and federal campaigns. He got his start in Durham as a volunteer for Bill Bell when he was elected to his first term as mayor. In 2004, he served as a Regional Field Organizer for the John Kerry for President campaign in Miami, Florida where he organized more than 100 voting precincts. In 2006, he trained candidates and campaign organizers in battleground states on behalf of a national progressive PAC.

After leaving the campaign trail, Troy returned to Washington, D.C. to serve as Deputy Director of External Relations for House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD). In 2010, Troy was selected as a presidential appointee to the U. S. Department of the Treasury, where he served as Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary who oversaw the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), and worked to assist struggling homeowners after the financial crisis.
