Treme 7th Ward Cultural District
Cheryl R. Austin, raised in Historic Treme, is the Executive Director of Greater Tremé Consortium, Inc., a twenty-three-year-old non-profit that has provided affordable housing services, a supporter of small business development; and a preservationist of indigenous culture and traditions of Historic Treme. State-appointed as liaison for Treme/7th Ward Culture District in April 2015, Cheryl is a licensed tour guide, culture event planner, and a participant in cultural and traditional activities which include designing and sewing traditional clothing, umbrellas, and sashes. Also, she is a community advocate for Treme residents and culture bearers.
Mission Statement:
Develop and implement goals and objectives to promote cultural products, programs, projects and activities to increase visitors to the Tremé/7th Ward Cultural District. Promote awareness of original artwork sales tax exemption and historic tax credits for business development. Create economic opportunities with special attention given to the Claiborne Corridor.
