The SIMS Foundation was founded in 1995 by the friends and family of Sims Ellison, a young Austin musician who lost his long battle with depression. The SIMS mission is the same after 21 years: to provide affordable counseling, psychiatric, and addiction recovery services, tailored specifically to the needs of Austin musicians and their families.
Austin is home to thousands of musicians and a music industry that contributes nearly a billion dollars to the local economy each year. Unfortunately, many working musicians do not have access to health insurance and cannot afford to pay out of pocket for mental health services. Hectic travel and touring schedules, financial insecurity, and close proximity to alcohol and drugs are just some of the occupational hazards that musicians face. With the rising cost of living and increasing competition for jobs in the music business, many of these musicians find themselves struggling financially and emotionally.
Many musicians have bettered their lives through SIMS services. "SIMS saved my life," is a quote that has been repeated by SIMS clients throughout the years. SIMS relies on the support of our dedicated volunteers, generous donors and community partners to continue its vital services.
