The Community Outreach Center at St. Matthew’s

The mission of the Community Center is to serve those in need by encouraging unity, respect and self-reliance through job and life skills training, technology instruction and English language acquisition.

To accomplish this mission, the Center conducts several programs:

  • GED:  for adults 22 years and older wanting to pass the GED exam
  • ESL: for adults wanting to improve their English language proficiency
  • Sharing With A Neighbor (SWAN):   This community ministry program provides emergency crisis relief to prevent eviction and utility shutoff to downtown Charleston residents. This program works along with the Pastor’s benevolent fund in meeting the vetted needs of those asking for items such as school uniforms, bus tickets and assistance with online job applications and other obstacles for the poor. Once each year assistance is granted only after an individual is counseled and the Charity Tracker online system is consulted.
  • Christmas Bags of Caring: to help homebound seniors during winter
  • Cinderella Project: to provide formal wear for low income teenagers
  • Emergency Food Pantry: affiliated with Low Country Food Bank to provide relief for individuals and families in need; open Monday & Wednesday 10am - Noon.  Contributions of food are collected during worship services on first Sunday of each month, "Red Wagon Sunday"
  • Bags of Love:  "pop-top" ready to eat, to-go foods provide immediate needs of simple, no-preperation food for those in need.  Contributions and donations are needed daily to support this ministry.
  • The Community Center hosts Barnabas Ministries' Next Steps program
