AYD Reimagined

Conceptualized by Olivia Harp and Yahya Mustafaa Madyun in December 2019, Advancing Youth Development Reimagined was formed to convene youth workers, youth development professionals, parents, stakeholders, and residents in Washington, DC to take a deeper dive into youth development principles and reimagine our work, our communities, and our world from an Advancing Youth Development perspective. Advancing Youth Development (AYD) is a national training program and professional development curriculum that is well established in the District, having been previously implemented by the National Training Institute for Community Youth Work and the DC Trust Corporation to further the network of committed professionals that provide quality programming for our children and youth in the District.

Later, in January 2020, Harp and Madyun invited thirteen AYD alumni who represented different DC universities, community-based organizations, district government agencies, and federal departments to deliver an impactful community event. However, strict social distancing mandates resulting from the world’s first global pandemic led to the event’s cancellation.

As the pandemic continued, businesses remain closed, unemployment rates rose, stay-at-home orders remained in place, and families felt stagnant as adults and young people worked and learned from home. To meet the needs of the young people and adults impacted by drastic, societal changes that forever altered the landscape of youth work and youth development, the AYD Reimagined Committee was formed to establish AYD Reimagined as a community initiative that yields positive youth development, collective impact, and learning opportunities.
