The .918 press

Although a private press, from 2017 onwards, the .918 press, London E3  is opening its doors; to workshops, community based projects, and investigations into language past, present and future. These include activities designed to inform, inspire, debate and provoke, all with letterpress printing and typography at their core. The .918 press is located on Fish Island, E3, an area with a rich printing/type and industrial heritage. The press has a Vandercook Universal 1 proofing press (print size 15.25" x 24"), with an adjustable bed, 4 x Adanas (two 5” x 8”, and two 3” x 5”), over 450 cases of metal and wood type, and approximately 1,000 letterpress ‘cuts’ with images, emblems and ornamental elements. Sheena Calvert, who initially amassed this equipment in the—shipping it back to the UK in 2003—has over 30 years experience in education, and has been using letterpress as a creative medium in her own practice as a designer, writer and artist, since 1983. She currently teaches at Camberwell College of Arts, The Royal College of Art, and has previously taught at Central St. Martins and The London College of Communciation. She has taught various letterpress workshops in New York/New Jersey, and in the UK, since 1995.
