Students of Salaam

Students of Salaam (SOS) was formed in response to the global refugee crisis and the violent political rhetoric that has created a culture of fear and exclusion in many American communities. We seek to help refugees and immigrants in New Haven schools feel valued by providing them with intellectually engaging English language lessons: we teach language through subjects like history, culture, writing, and song, thereby offer students a space to realize their worth and gain self-confidence in their new community.

Our monthly community events, held in collaboration with the New Haven Free Public Library are geared for members of the greater New Haven Community that are not familiar with the refugee crisis or Arab speaking populations. Our events include Arabic movie nights, cooking lessons, town halls to discuss the refugee crisis and New Haven’s large refugee population.
