We deploy creatively diverse and practical interventions to help startups engender enduring notable results in spite of the highly challenging operating environment. As a one-stop shop for all that startups require for survival, growth and flourishing, our solutions are tailored—strictly startups

StartUp+ started as a business skill empowerment initiative conceived and implemented as Enterprise Development Summit, a 3-day event in April 2013 where eight startups participated. Following the need for follow-up support, it became necessary to expand the scope of the initiative to include research into the critical challenges startups are faced with, and proffering of viable solutions.

On 31st of August 2014, the name StartUpPluswas conceived, the interventions organized and the flagship intervention deployed—Startup Consulting. StartUp+ comes in direct response to the untimely death of startups in developing countries owing primarily to a plethora of lethal challenges including harsh operating environments, abysmal knowledge gaps, incompetency in organizational development, poor funding structures, absence of enabling economic policies, and unavailable startup-tailored interventions in consulting, training and coaching. The Executive Director, Adeleke David, stumbled on the staggering figures that there were 32 million SMEs in Nigeria in 2015. His question was: Where are they? Taking a critical look into figures, it was reported that 40% of them will be out of business by the end of 2016. By 2020, after 5 years, 80% of them will have failed—that is a staggering 25.6 million! The rest of the bad news is that by 2025, more than 80% of the remaining 6.4 million startups that survived the first five years will fall in the second five years—that is ≥5.12 million startups dipped into the grave! That leaves less than 1.28 million of the 32 million after 10 years—a meager 4% survival rate.

The first step taken was to develop specialized consulting interventions for startups combining critical features with affordability. StartUp+ gained the interest of the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria, Protea Hotels and TVC News Africa for partnership. StartUp+ proceeded to flag-off a feature radio series, “PreStartup: What to do before you start business” on Effectiveness on Radio Show and generated remarkable response from listeners. Next, the inaugural StartUp+ Conference was held on November 28th 2014 in Surulere, Lagos, supported by Global Impact, Praiseworld Radio, and Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) among others. StartUp+ Conference has grown to become an annual event that hosts over 120 startups at no cost.

In proactive response to internal projections on the global economy, StartUpPlus initiated the #StrictlyStartups project with an objective to support the birth of 100,000 startups in 2016. The project evolved into the creation of – an intel centre for startups to find valuable news and information for making better decisions and leveraging on opportunities. Within the first month after its launch, attracted more than 100 visitors from more than 20 countries across the world. The overwhelming comments of some visitors attest to the validity of the intel centre’s effectiveness and relevance to startup development.
