Southern Shakespeare Company

Mission Statement: Southern Shakespeare Company, making Shakespeare accessible and fun, cultivating an appreciation of the arts through educational programs, training, and an annual free Shakespeare in the park Festival.

History: In 1995 Southern Shakespeare Festival began as a touring company which toured local theaters, high schools, and community art centers. After Southern Shakespeare Festival’s first year, in conjunction with FSU’s School of Theater Dean, Richard Fallon, SSF established a home in Tallahassee, Florida with a free Shakespeare festival in the park. During its short lifetime it put on plays such aA Midsummer Night’s DreamThe Taming of the ShrewAs You Like ItMerry Wives of Windsor and The Tempest. The free festival found its home in Tallahassee’s Kleman Plaza and ran until 2000.

After a fourteen-year hiatus, Southern Shakespeare Festival has been revived thanks to Dr. Kevin Carr, Dr. Brent Griffin, and a dedicated group of Tallahassee theater artisans, including Laura Johnson, the Executive Director, and Lanny Thomas, the Artistic Director.

Today: Southern Shakespeare Company, a professional theatre company with a year-round education mission, makes Shakespeare accessible, fun, and cultivates an appreciation of the arts through educational programs and our annual FREE Shakespeare at Cascades Park every spring, in Tallahassee, FL
