Society of Black Lawyers

The Society of Black Lawyers (SBL) is the oldest organisation of African, Asian, Caribbean and ethnic minority lawyers in the United Kingdom.  Founded by the late Rudy Narayan and Sigbhat Kadri QC in 1969, the SBL had two primary objectives:

  • to work towards the elimination of discrimination and inequality within the legal profession; and
  • to advocate for equality of opportunity and access to justice for ethnic minority and disadvantaged communities through the provsion of effective legal representation, advocacy, education and leadership.
A crucial link between these two objectives is our belief that a diverse legal profession is essential for delivering effective services to a diverse society.
The SBL has been at the forefront of many of the equality and diversity developments within the legal profession.
