Skyler McCurine

“Earning your value through self advocacy is an act of social justice.”  Skyler McCurine’s journey towards earning her value began seven years ago when she started her consulting business, Le Red Balloon.  It was in through her business that she came to truly understand all of the ways she had internalized the messaging that she, a Black woman, should be grateful for opportunities that she had earned and that I had been accepting accolades as a form of currency. Anaïs Nin said, “the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” It was in this spirit that I enlisted the help of my mentor and colleague, negotiation expert, Ann Marie Houghtailing.   Advocating for her value deeply transformed her own life and her immediate community; the need to not only do this work but also bring others along and proselytize this work became her primary focus. Her work fostering audacious leadership and courage in leaders led to invitation to work with some of country's most reputable brands such as : Jack in the Box, Ultimate Software and TEDx, SD Business Journal “Emerging Generation Award” and her recent invitation to attend the Forbes Under 30 Summit as Swiss Luxury watch brand’ Baume &Mercier’s guest of distinction. She was a finalist for the 2016 Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the social entrepreneurship category. She is a native San Diegan and received her BA in Communication Studies from Loyola Marymount University and MA in Organizational Management from Ashford University. Her fervent belief in equity, inclusion, red balloons, and champagne are her personal north stars.
