SC Special Olympics Area 8

Special Olympics in Area 8 encompasses the special needs athletes, children and adults alike, in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties.  Special Olympics organizes and funds sporting events, where the athletes in our area can compete and socially interact.  Throughout the year, the athletes practice regularly with trained coaches to prepare for these events, including, but not limited to, golf, tennis, horseback riding, bowling, swimming, and track.  For people with intellectual disabilities, these practices and events are often the only time that they participate actively in our community and develop a sense of pride in themselves.  Many of our athletes would live their lives socially excluded and neglected, but instead our program allows for them to become empowered and accepted, evident by the expressions on their faces each and every time they participate in their sport.  The number of adults and children with intellectual disabilities in our area is constantly growing, and it is so important that we continue to provide them with this gateway to empowerment through sport.
