Project Hi-AWARE & School Climate Transformation LMW Team (Leilehua, Mililani, Waialua)

In 2014, The Hawai`i Department of Education was awarded funds through SAMHSA’s Grant program based on President Obama’s Now Is The Time initiative. The Project AWARE and School Climate Transformation grants provide funding to local educational agencies to improve emotional and behavioral health and wellness among school-aged youth and their communities, develop systems of support within the schools to implement evidence-based, multi-tier supports, and improve behavioral outcomes and learning conditions for all students. Among other activities, the grants meet these goals by:

  • Providing training in Youth Mental Health First Aid to adults who regularly interact with school-aged youth

  • Collaborating with schools, families, and communities to develop programs that are culturally specific and developmentally appropriate

  • Promoting mental wellness intiatives, illness prevention, early identification, and treatment services

  • Facilitating access to school and community-based mental health services
